Bush Is A Dimwit, Not The Devil

September 28, 2006 · Leave a Comment

The big news in the Buenos Aires Herald this morning was a recent interview with Chavez (not the Venezuelan one but the guy running for office in Ecuador) who said that President Bush is “dim-witted” and that comparing him to the devil is actually an insult to the devil who is himself both evil AND intelligent….OUCH!

It would be easy to dismiss this opinion as coming from some ignoramus except that the guy has a PhD from the University of Illinois! Yes.  And he goes on to say that he has nothing but affection for the people of the US but has serious problems with the fact that we have a president who won through “trickery”….

Oh, but no worries.  He said that if he won the election in Ecuador, he’d put aside his personal feelings and deal with the US leader with the utmost respect.  Hmmm.

Walking on Cabildo

September 28, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Last week, on Spring Day, Talya’s friend Alan was walking across Cabildo, a busy avenue, staying right there in his crosswalk.  A guy on a motorcycle came along and ran right into him.  And then the guy on the motorcycle kept going!

People gathered around Alan, who was lying in the street after having flown several feet in the air.  Then here comes the motorcyclist, returning to the scene of the crime, and he starts YELLING at Alan!

And of course, this caused everyone who had gathered to start YELLING at the motorcycle driver. Lots of gesturing and yelling ensued.

Ah, there’s that Argentine passion.

Well, the good news is that Alan went to the hospital and didn’t have any broken bones…just bruises.  Lucky!

Buenos Aires–City of Faded Elegance

September 22, 2006 · 2 Comments

There are some great blogs/bloggers here in BA and I have a new favorite every week.  This week?  It’s

http://baires.elsur.org/  which calls itself “Buenos Aires:  City of Faded Elegance”… It has some good photos and great bits on history, culture, politics and whatever people happen to be talking about here. (I still love Robert Wright’s blog best for photos.  He’s got a great eye and I love what he chooses to photograph.  See his stuff at http://www.wrighton.com.ar/ )

And yeah, BA is faded.  And it’s elegant.  And there’s just so darn much to see. Every day I discover wonderful things right here in my own neighborhood.  I mean, I’d have to walk in loops for days in order to see everything on every street.

Just yesterday, Teal and Talya and I walked three(!) blocks to yet another lunch spot we hadn’t yet tried and on the way–yes, TWO blocks away but on a street we rarely take–we spotted a shop called “Taeko”–yeah, my oldest daughter’s Japanese name.  It is next door to a [Japanese] laundry place, so I am guessing it is owned by the family.  The place was closed and we couldn’t see in.  Who knows what’s inside? But you can bet Taeko will make sure she gets a great photo of herself in front of that sign…

Whether it’s graceful architecture, quirky stencil art, a blooming banana tree, an art studio or yet another coffee shop or casa de queso (house of cheese–and wine!) or fruit stand…there’s something around every corner.

Speaking of corners, the excitement on our street is the new helado (ice cream) shop that JUST opened yesterday on the corner on my block.  It was packed last night.

Wow.  Dangerous.  Outdoor seating and everything.  And summer is coming.  Good thing the gym is only a block away in the other direction!

Happy Spring Day/Student Day!

September 22, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Yes, here in the southern hemisphere–or, at least, here in Argentina–September 21st is celebrated as the first day of spring.  Everywhere we went, people were handing out fresh flowers.  In addition, today is Student Day–there was no school and students packed every park to picnic with their friends.  As it turned out, today was a beautiful day–and apparently this is unusual for Spring Day–so you could feel that whole spring-is-in-the-air thing.

I’ve painted six canvases this week and have three huge ones I will play with tomorrow…and plan to buy more.  The art club/supplies store ladies think I am some sort of crazed artist working day and night. They also think I must be terribly experienced.  HA!  Little do they know this is my first week as a painter.  But hey, you should’ve seen me get those canvases to my apartment.  Yes, it’s only two blocks away, but I had to get a taxi for the second trip because the canvases were so big.

In the US even small canvases can be $20 each, but here, they’re really reasonable.  In fact, I bought the biggest canvas in the store–over 3 feet by over four feet–for US$20.  Quite a big bang for the buck! And hey, a cheap way to cover lots of wall space.

The girls are being quite patient with me.  They haven’t complained about the plastic all over the floors and dining table, the canvases stacked all over, the smell of paint, the paint brushes drying next to the kitchen sink….

And today, quite unexpectedly, some workers showed up to remove the glass panels from our balcony railing.  The recent hailstorm actually dented the metal bars and they are being replaced.  So now, in addition to the paint paraphernalia, there are glass panels leaning against the living room wall and workers’ footprints all over the wood floors.  I guess it’s a good thing I haven’t put any pots or plants on the balcony yet or they, too, would be filling the living room.

Ah, well.  Who cares?  It’s SPRING! ;-)
